First things first, fiber is a plant based food that our bodies can’t digest. It passes through our digestive tract without providing nutrition or any calories. However, it is extremely healthy for us.
Fiber helps keep our bowel movements regular and fights off certain diseases. Carcinogens found in our intestines bind themselves to the fiber and move through our colon more quickly than they otherwise would, hence reducing our risk for colon cancer. Fiber also helps transport cholesterol out of our body, lowering our risk for heart disease.
Cultures that tend to eat greater amounts of fiber-rich foods are generally healthier. While all of the reasons for this are not known, it may be because the fiber-rich foods themselves are healthier. Fiber’s greatest value is in helping to keep us slim.
